The Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa or SESSA, as it is more affectionately known, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting and increasing the use of renewable energy. Renewable energy technologies include all solar-based energies such as photovoltaics, thermal heating and cooling, wind, biomass and hydro, to name a few. Other utilization possibilities of this principle source of energy are in passive building design and energy efficiency. Since 1992, over 3,200 students have attended hands-on workshops on renewable energy, ecological design, sustainable living practices and alternative construction techniques like strawbale, cob, and bamboo. Students come from all over the United States and from abroad to attend classes taught by professionals in the field. Since 1995, over half a million people have visited our 12-acre demonstration center located in Hopland, California.
