ASTM is a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for producers, users, ultimate consumers, and those having a general interest (representatives of government and academia) to meet on common ground and write standards for materials, products, systems, and services. From the work of 132 standards-writing committees, ASTM publishes standard test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classifications, and terminology. ASTM's standards development activities encompass metals, paints, plastics, textiles, petroleum, construction, energy, the environment, consumer products, medical services and devices, computerized systems, electronics, and many other areas. ASTM Headquarters has no technical research or testing facilities; such work is done voluntarily by 35,000 technically qualified ASTM members located throughout the world. - Business type: nonprofit organization

Since 1992, over 3,200 students have attended hands-on workshops on renewable energy, ecological design, sustainable living practices and alternative construction techniques like strawbale, cob, and bamboo. Students come from all over the United States and from abroad to attend classes taught by professionals in the field. Since 1995, over half a million people have visited our 12-acre demonstration center located in Hopland, California. The site is powered entirely by working renewable energy systems, and features a 5,000 sq. foot strawbale building with innovative passive solar design and the creative use of recycled materials. The gorgeous landscape features a permaculture design with a wide selection of organically grown edible and ornamental plant varieties. Interactive displays and specialized tours make the Solar Living Center a major destination and regional learning center for school groups, environmentalists, design professionals and the general pub!lic.
