The Global Environment Facility was established to forge international cooperation and finance actions to address four critical threats to the global environment: biodiversity loss, climate change, degradation of international waters, and ozone depletion. Related work to stem the pervasive problem of land degradation is also eligible for GEF funding. Launched in 1991 as an experimental facility, GEF was restructured after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to serve the environmental interests of people in all parts of the world. The facility that emerged after restructuring was more strategic, effective, transparent, and participatory. In 1994, 34 nations pledged $2 billion in support of GEF's mission; in 1998, 36 nations pledged $2.75 billion to protect the global environment and promote sustainable development. The GEF can succeed in its global environmental mission only as part of a worldwide movement toward sustainable development. REDI is a nonprofit scientific and educational corporation promoting the widespread use of environmentally sound energy and transportation technologies, while facilitating research and development.
Established in 1992 during the second World Renewable Energy Congress in Reading, UK, WREN is one of the most effective organizations in supporting and enhancing the utilisation and implementation of renewable energy sources that are both environmentally safe and economically sustainable. This is done through a worldwide network of agencies, laboratories, institututions, companies and individuals, all working together towards the international diffusion of renewable energy technologies and applications. Representing most countries in the world, it aims to promote the communication and technical education of scientists, engineers, technicians and managers in this field and to address itself to the energy needs of both developing and developed countries. Over two billion dollars have now been allocated to projects dealing with renewable energy and the environment by the World Solar Summit and World Solar Decade along with the World Bank. This shows that at last the important message is being heard. The renewable energy community has exhibited a lot of courage, stamina and willpower, demonstrating renewable energy to be a viable energy provider. We should continue at a faster pace.
The Irish Wind Energy Association is a voluntary organisation of people interested in the promotion of wind energy in Ireland. In the 1980s the Solar Energy Association of Ireland represented the interests of those interested in any form of renewable energy, with the exception of those involved with hydroelectric power, who already had their own association. These organisations consisted mainly of people determined to do something to help develop environmentally-friendly, non-polluting sources of energy. In 1993 those interested in wind energy in particular formed the Irish Wind Energy Association. The association has grown to several hundred members since then. There are over 338 MW of wind turbines installed in the country.
